Travelling is a Learning Experience

When I was young, I never had the chance to really go out and see beyond the province where I grew up with. Not even around the country. It was only when I was working that I had the chance to travel the Philippines and in Asia.

As I was visiting these foreign places both locally and abroad, I realized I had missed out on a lot of things. One wrong notion I had on travelling, to my mind I treat it as an expense, which shouldn’t be the case. Admittedly, travelling requires you to spend but for you to maximize its benefit and enjoy it is to consider it as an investment.

Travelling is a learning experience, you get to see a world different from your own. Learn their language, their culture, appreciate their food and discover a thing or two as you go through this wonderful experience.
We live in a magnificent world, full of beauty and adventures waiting to be discovered. There is no limit to the things we can do; it is only the mind that sets our limitations.

“All travel has its advantages. If the passenger visits better countries, he may learn to improve his own. And if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn to enjoy it.” – Samuel Johnson

On house furnishings

It’s been a while since I have purchased any major furniture for the house. The main reason is that we are still renting. I would not want to purchase anything and then it might not fit the house that we will acquire. Waste of money is one thing I am avoiding.

Probably the major thing I have done for my furniture would be the re-upholstery of my sofa set, acquiring tv stands for the television sets, and the little stuff that are really necessary. I'm reserving my energy and excitement in furnishing our own house. I am still hopeful that our dream house will cease to be a dream one day .... with God's grace.

Buying Toys Online

With our busy schedule, more and more moms (and dads) are finding it more convenient to buy things online, most especially when it comes to buying their children’s toys.

I must say it’s kind of cool, aside from the fact that it saves you a lot of time, it can also be a bonding moment with your kid as you go through the pages and choose the toy or toys they like. Since you do not have to worry about travel time and long lines going to the cashier, you have more time to talk about and deliberate your choices. It’s also easier to choose, since you can opt to pick out toys by price range, by gender and by category. Isn’t that fun? Maybe you can stumble into one of their “sale” items without haggling through the crowd of people wanting to get the best bargain. That’s truly an added benefit!

Choosing a tile design

Whether you are renovating or building your own house, using the perfect tile or tile design is a very important factor. Be it in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or living room, whatever design you choose will be an integral part in contributing to the total look of your house.

For Kitchens and Bathrooms, aside from the design you should also consider its durability, resistance to stains and one that is easy to maintain in terms of cleaning.

For the living room, since this is the place where you most probably receive your guests, the design should reflect your individual character or your personality.

For the bedroom, which is often your sanctuary -- a place where you relax, the design that you will choose should bring warmth and coziness to the room.

To “Unfriend” a friend

With the rising popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, etc., people connect faster with their friends, relatives and peers. It keeps you in touch with people whom you call friends.

I opened my Facebook account to let me touch base with my relatives in and out of the country. It also allowed me to touch base with old friends especially my high school friends whom for quite some time, I have lost connection with.

However with all these positive things you can draw from using a social networking site, it is also a fact that it is prone to drama. Sometimes over sharing can lead to negative feedback from your so-called friends which can give you enough reason to “unfriend” a friend. Fortunately for me, this has yet to happen and I sure hope it won’t ever happen.

I guess many people have experienced this kind of drama in their online life enough to catch the attention of Oxford Dictionary, as they declare “unfriend” as 2009 Word of the Year.
Oxford defines "unfriend," a verb, thusly: "To remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook."
As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.”
Let's just say that in my vocabulary, a friend should be a friend forever.

Welcoming a new sibling

Welcoming a new baby is a very exciting phase in building up your family. However, parents should also consider how an older child may feel knowing that she now has a competition for mom and dad's attention. It shouldn't be the case, it's a matter of preparing your older child. I was particular on this matter with my daughter. I made every step to make her feel more comfortable with the arrival of her baby brother. I made her feel secure and less displaced by making her part of the welcoming committee.

Even before my son was born, I have prepared my daughter by always telling her what to expect; that she will be Mommy's little helper in taking care of the baby. I let her feel my tummy and talk to his brother while inside the womb, and tell her things like how a baby's sleep pattern can affect mom's sleep pattern. This way she won't be surprised when mommy wakes up late. Or things like the advantages of being an "ate" (older sister), like she can teach lots of stuff to him. Most importantly, "ownership" is a major part of welcoming by choosing words like "baby brother" rather than the "new baby", this way she knows that she is part of the team.

She played a role in taking care of her newly born brother. Even though most of my family members do not agree since my son was born underweight, my family was so scared to even carry him, the very reason why they were very careful with my daughter around him. But that did not stop me from letting her be close as possible to her brother, with my supervision, she was able to sleep beside him, feed him, cuddle and play with him. I also give her assignments such as handing me the diaper or the towel, holding the feeding bottle, preparing her baby brother's clothes and stuff that she enjoys doing.

Welcome my baby brother!

Studies say that children with the closest relationships with their mothers show the most upset after the baby is born while children with a close relationship with their father seem to adjust better. With that in mind, I tried to be more affectionate in terms of my relationship with my daughter. This way I believe I am minimizing sibling rivalry and play down any power struggle as early as possible. There are times that she would "act out" like a baby, get cranky and throw some tantrums but I know that she only wants assurance that she is still loved.

Remembering my kid's newborn days...

mommy moments

It's been a while since I have gone through the photos of my kids as newborn. As I scan these photos, I cannot help but reminisce the days when they were so fragile and delicate. Oh, how time flies....

This is our first born ... isn't she cute? She's already a teenager and I still consider her my baby.

firstborn

And our bunso (youngest child), who is now a tweener....

Our Bunso

I would like to thank Chris of Mommy Moments for coming up with such an interesting meme. This is a good exercise for me. My kids are all grown up now and I have not regretted a single moment, I have chosen to grow up with them, to savor all our moments together, to witness their milestones and just to be there for them.

New Year's List 2010

mommy moments

Every year, I look forward to the promise of a brighter future. That’s why I love New Year... it always gives you a fresh start. Change is the only thing that is constant in this world and I am expecting a lot of that this year, hopefully a lot of positive changes.

Here are some of the goals I have listed for this New Year:

• Sleep early – LOL! But no kidding, I need to get into the habit of sleeping normally. It’s affecting my health already.
• Be productive online – meaning to update my blogs rather than doing nonsense when I am online.
• Be serious with my weight loss – this is something I need to do more for health purposes. Life online is quite sedentary and I need to move those muscles.
• Summer Activities - Kids will hopefully have a fruitful summer with their planned summer activities.
• Photography Class – from basic to advance. I plan to take it up on the next level.
• Travel – is always a good way to learn. I just hope we can do more travel adventures this year.

This is quite a short list from what I have, but somethings I opted to keep it to myself (if you know what I mean). With the help of prayers, we can do all of these things and more this year.

If you want to share your New Year’s list, come join us on Mommy Moments .
