Calming the Mind

We come to know Yoga for different reasons. As for me, after having knee trauma due to excessive use of the treadmill, I had to find an exercise regimen which is low to moderate impact. When I heard of Yoga studio opening nearby, I had to check it out.

I have been practicing Yoga for five months now and I admit I am slowly reaping its benefit in terms of my physical state -- shedding off inches here and there -- but the most important benefit I have gained through the practice of Yoga is that it has modulated my stress response. Not that I do not get stressed at all, that would be impossible for a person who is a "worry wart" and has in my belief (and my kids too!) a semi - OCD behaviour.

For a SAHM like me, it's hard not to be affected by everyday stress especially when you attend to your children and the household each day. However nowadays, I can feel that I am more composed and less irritable and more importantly, I try not to worry about things that is not the in the "present", which was a practice of mine ever since. Don't get me wrong, I still plan ahead but now, I can already block the worries of the future ... just by calming my mind.

That mental state of calmness was not even an inch possible for me a year ago. My family, especially hubs, would often complain about my being edgy all the time....worrying about so many things.

I really didn't notice the change until during one of the sessions I attended at the Urban Ashram Manila, when Lasse, one of the instructors, talked about 'calming the mind'. He says that when you practice yoga and concentrate on meditation techniques -- like the way you breathe and disengaging from your thoughts and present worries, it helps calm the mind.

That's when it suddenly hit me.... Oh yes, that's true!  Now I can slowly (not completely) shrug off the worries of the future and concentrate on what is present.

I can honestly say that I was right in choosing yoga as my exercise regimen and selected the perfect yoga studio. I do hope intend to continue and deepen my practice.

Namaste.
